FSC Tech Hub

Designing technology that strengthens food safety culture — and the work behind it.

Technology that becomes part of the work

The partnership between Social Food and Complago, a CERTH spin-off, creates a new field of design: the FSC Tech Hub. We bring together Social Food’s field-based expertise, interdisciplinary approach, and established work in Food Safety Culture with Complago’s research-driven capacity in Artificial Intelligence and digital compliance solutions, in order to develop technology that supports regulatory needs while moving beyond them, turning compliance into a more intelligent and culture-building process, towards stronger behaviours, better learning, and more resilient Food Safety Management Systems.

Our starting point is simple: technology in the food industry should not function as yet another “black box” that distances users from understanding their own work. It should become a tool for engagement, learning, and better practice. It should connect with the real environment of the factory, with people’s skills, with the decisions made during the shift, and with the behaviours that support food safety.

From this design philosophy, we draw one critical principle: good technology does not hide complexity; it translates it into useful understanding. It creates space for practical knowledge, observations, behavioural data, feedback, and targeted training. In this way, technology can become part of the organisation’s cultural maturity, rather than simply an external system of control.

Better technology, more attractive industrial work

Digitalization in the food industry is not only about productivity or compliance. It can also contribute to something deeper: creating a more attractive, more learning-oriented, and more modern work experience. International and sector-specific discussions show that younger workers look for jobs with development prospects, purpose, safety, learning opportunities, and meaningful use of technology. In the agri-food sector, digitalization is already linked to skills upgrading, practical training, and a transformation of the very profile of work inside the factory.

This is particularly important for an industry that needs to attract and retain people. The attractiveness of work is not built only through wages or corporate image, but also through the way everyday work itself is designed: how easily someone can learn, what work tools they use, how quickly they receive support, how clearly they understand what needs to be done, and how actively they participate in improving the system.

For this reason, FSC Tech Hub designs technology with both the system and the user in mind. We create tools that organise knowledge more effectively, support training, facilitate the transfer of experience from senior to younger employees, and make everyday work less isolated, less bureaucratic, more participatory and transparent, with visible accountability and faster improvement cycles.

In this sense, Food Safety Culture Technology is more than a technological add-on, it is an operating structure for designing better Food Safety Management Systems, while also shaping industrial work that is more attractive, more modern, and more meaningful.

This is the role of the FSC Tech Hub: to bring together food safety culture, artificial intelligence, digital compliance, and human-centred design into a focused space for developing a next generation of food safety technology.
